Carvers' Guild Mirrors history
Carvers' Guild has a rich history dating back over 40 years. Founded by Carl and Carol Canner, this internationally renowned company has become synonymous with old-world craftsmanship and exceptional design. Since its inception in 1970, Carvers' Guild has proudly upheld the tradition of manufacturing its mirrors in the USA, even in the face of growing imports.
The story of Carvers' Guild began romantically in the summer of 1961 when Carol, a painting major at the Rhode Island School of Design, opened a portrait gallery in Provincetown on Cape Cod. Meanwhile, Carl, studying Geology at Harvard, found a job on the Cape framing Carol's portraits. Their shared passion for art and design soon brought them together, and they were married.
In 1964, Carvers' Guild made its debut in Boston when Carl installed mirrors into his first shipment of hand-carved picture frames from South Korea and sold them to the furniture trade. This initial success paved the way for Carol's transition into designing and manufacturing mirrors. The brand quickly expanded its sourcing to other countries, including Taiwan, Belgium, and Italy.
However, a fortuitous event would solidify Carvers' Guild's commitment to domestic manufacturing. In 1970, their Boston workshop was struck by lightning. This incident led the Canners to establish a permanent home for Carvers' Guild in a complex of cherry red 19th-century mill buildings in West Groton, Massachusetts. From that point on, they made the decision to stop importing and have since manufactured every component and product on-site. This vertical integration has allowed Carvers' Guild to maintain direct control over the manufacturing process, ensuring consistently exceptional quality in their mirrors.
Today, Carvers' Guild produces over four hundred exceptional mirrors, including the Carol Canner Collections and licensed reproductions for esteemed organizations such as the Newport Society in Rhode Island and Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. Each mirror is made to order in the USA, and the brand's commitment to the true family spirit is evident in the craftsmanship of each piece. A Carvers' Guild mirror is not just a decorative piece but an heirloom to be treasured for generations to come.
With their longstanding history and commitment to quality and craftsmanship, Carvers' Guild continues to be a leading brand in the world of decorative mirrors. By embracing the values of old-world artistry and exceptional design, Carvers' Guild mirrors have become a symbol of enduring beauty and timeless elegance.
